When someone you love is diagnosed with cancer, it can be a difficult and emotional time for both of you. It’s common to feel unsure of how to act around them and how to provide the support they need. You may worry about saying or doing the wrong thing, and that’s okay. The fact that you’re looking for ways to help means your heart is in the right place.

If you’re not sure what to do or say, it’s okay to ask. Your loved one will appreciate your honesty and openness. But while it is important to ask what they need, it can also be helpful to find simple yet concrete ways to support them. Small and practical gestures like volunteering to take care of their day-to-day tasks can make a world of difference. Even the smallest actions can help bring comfort and relief to your loved one during this difficult time. Doing some of the things listed below will show them that you care. Plus, it can also greatly improve their quality of life.

  1. Offer emotional support. Listen to your loved one, and be there for them when they need to talk.
  2. Offer practical support. Help with tasks such as grocery shopping, cooking meals, running errands, and taking care of household chores.
  3. Offer financial support. Offer to help with medical bills, transportation costs, and other expenses related to their treatment.
  4. Offer spiritual support. Pray with them, read scripture, or just be there to provide comfort and hope.
  5. Educate yourself. Learn about the type of cancer your family member has, and the treatments they are receiving.
  6. Advocate for them. Speak up for them when they need help or support from medical professionals or other family members. Take notes when you go with them for doctor’s appointments, so they’ll have all the information they need later.
  7. Don’t treat them differently. Talk to them like you normally would, tell jokes, talk about the people you know, and watch your favorite TV shows together. This can help them take their mind off of cancer for a brief moment.
  8. Take care of yourself. Make sure you are getting enough rest, staying active, and eating well. Keeping yourself healthy will benefit you both in the long run.

From taking care of the grocery shopping to driving them to appointments, these small acts of kindness can make a big difference. The love and support you show can help to ease the patient’s stress, and give them the energy to focus on healing.

Remember that every person with cancer is different, and what works for one person may not work for another. It’s important to listen to your loved one and be flexible in your approach. Showing empathy, patience, and support can go a long way in helping them feel cared for and comforted. A cancer diagnosis marks the start of a difficult journey. But with you by their side, your loved one does not have to go through it alone.
