SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY
Responsible for performing routine and non-routine activities pertaining to laboratory testing and the reporting of results. Also performs the assigned analytical testing procedure in an accurate, precise, and timely manner.
OBJECTIVES OF THE POSITION
To exercise technical and specific functions in the laboratory and aid physicians in the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of the disease.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Laboratory Testing
- Performs special haematological examinations such as hemostasis procedures, reticulocyte counts, peripheral blood smears, and reviews slides to verify the presence of abnormal cells.
- Performs microscopic examinations and cell counts of urine and other body fluids.
- Performs a variety of bacteriological examinations, such as culture and sensitivity of body fluids and tissue samples; uses the KOH mount to determine the presence of fungi, bacteria, and other microorganisms, reads and interprets slides for Gram stain and AFB stain.
- Performs chemistry procedures and immunoassay procedures
- Performs histopathologic procedures such as routine biopsy, frozen section, Pap’s smear, cytology, FNAB, and cell block.
- Validates and releases laboratory test results accurately within the turnaround time.
- Recognizes and reports abnormal test results and/or the need of additional testing.
- Responsible for interpreting and communicating critical patient results to the Chief Medical Technologist, then to the requesting physician.
Laboratory Quality Control
- Performs and monitors quality control in the assigned section in the laboratory.
- Initially, they troubleshoot and maintain laboratory equipment.
- Verifies the correctness and accuracy of test results for reporting.
- Reports equipment breakdown to the biomedical engineer and/or to the supplier’s service engineer.
- Strictly follow the laboratory safety guidelines.
- Prepares and submits monthly quality control reports.
- Actively participate in the implementation of process improvement.
Patient Relations
- During assignments on the first floor laboratory area, politely and promptly receive patients in preparation for laboratory procedures.
- Provides reassurance and provides health education to patients before the procedure.
- actively responds to patient’s needs to provide excellent healthcare.
- Responds to in-person and telephone inquiries from patients, referring laboratories, and clinic staff.
Other related tasks or functions:
- Maintains confidentiality of records
- Participates in continuing education.
- Follows good laboratory practices.
- Prepares weekly and monthly inventory of supplies and stocks on hand for laboratory use and
- Order supplies as needed.
- May perform complex venipuncture procedures.
